The SCENTSOURCE Academy is an odour detection school consisting of modular programs designed for experienced and inexperienced practitioners and scientists who want to approach the practice of canine detection from the foundational perspective of odour and odour-based detection.

It commences with a 4-day “graduate level I” theoretical class which is designed to learn what “odor-based training” is, and to cover scientifically fundamental aspects of odor such as: scent/odor theories for the practitioner; the genesis, laws, rules, and dynamics of odor; the function of noses, olfaction biophysics and odor perception; the differences between “parent odor” and “training odor;” and how to use odor knowledge to predict and improve training odor and K9 performance.

Definitions, and vocabulary (language) will also be addressed, defined, discussed, and unified with mainstream science within the graduate level I class. This is a fundamental-intensive theoretical class and a high pass-rate is required for graduation.

Subsequent instruction levels (II – IV) are available for the development of further understanding, comprehension and application of the theoretical knowledge learnt in Level I. 

These will involve immersive practical training experiences in the SCENTSOURCE™ odor-based detection approach with the tutelage and supervision of seasoned instructors and SCENTMaster facilities, using their own dogs or other dogs within the practice, and within a stipulated uninterrupted timeframe

Additional practical and theoretical training, plus 2 years of active training experience is required to cover the depth of theoretical training and the years of practical experience required to become a SCENTInstructor.

·         That Uses Nomenclature, Vocabulary and Definitions That Fuses Data and Unifies The K9-Detection Profession With The Rest of The Scientific World.

·         SCENTSOURCE Graduate Level 1: 32 HR THEORETICAL COURSE

·         SCENTSOURCE Graduate Level II: 10-DAY PRACTICAL TRAINING COURSE

·         SCENTSOURCE Graduate Level III: 3-MONTH PRACTICAL TRAINING COURSE

·         SCENTSOURCE Graduate Level IV: 6-MONTH ADVANCED PRACTICAL + THEORETICAL COURSE

·         SCENTSOURCE SCENTInstructor SPECIALIST TEACHER TRAINING: 2 X 2 WEEK TRAINING AT SCENTSOURCE ACADEMY DESIGNATED OR APPROVED FACILITY

A SCENTSOURCE graduate member can become a SCENTInstructor after completing Graduate Level IV training and satisfying the following additional specialist-teacher training requirements: (i) attending any two extra levels of additional teacher training (2 weeks each) with a SCENTSOURCE ACADEMY instructor, (ii) earning two years’ of logged working/training experience using odor-based training methods, (iii) providing a referenced and traceable history of imprinting and training at least 10 green dogs on odor, and thereafter certifying them on operational targets.

Modified Level III Training and/or Level IV Waivers may be granted to qualified applicants towards the SCENTInstructor Program.

Waivers may be allowed at the discretion of an education & training administrative team comprising of SCENTSOURCE SCENTMaster Practitioners and Scientists. The team will also meet on nominating and validating SCENTInstructors as SCENTCertifiers.

SCENTMASTER’ (SCENTMASTER PRIME - SCENTMASTERS with a Level I and II training) can teach level III & IV qualification stages while a SCENTMASTER can teach a Level IV
